ISML 2022 was the 15th edition of the International Saimoe League.
On 2022 May 25, Maglor announced in the ISML Discord server that the tournament will begin on 2022 September 28.[1] On July 24, Chibasa announced that ISML 2022 will be the final edition, owing to "lack of the staff's number, work hours, and technical capabilities" making it "difficult to maintain a stable and largely fair operation of ISML for much longer".[2][3] The official charter of ISML 2022, which stipulates the format and rules of the tournament, was first released on September 20[4] by starryrainynight, a Chinese staff member and founder of the recently-created ISML chat group in the social media app QQ[5].
ISML 2022's format used a condensed schedule of at least five months. The main tournament[note1][note2] consisted of at least 96 characters, while the regular season had 72 contestants. All anime characters were eligible for nomination in main tournament, including previous ISML champions and characters who first appeared in 2022. The gem rounds were heavily reworked: they will no longer be associated with the regular season's periods; instead, all gem rounds were held throughout the entire tournament and had no label until a winner is decided. The "one necklace / pendant per year" rule was also abolished for this edition, and the gem rounds were tweaked in order to prioritize a character's missing and/or most appropriate gem for them. Finally, the playoffs stage returned to a modified double-elimination bracket: the grand final was contested between the upper bracket winner and the two lower bracket finalists in an instant-runoff vote match. If one of the lower bracket finalists won the IRV match, they will play against the upper bracket winner again in a range-voting "bracket reset" round to decide the champion.
ISML 2021 champions Elaina and Sakuta Azusagawa returned to defend their title this year. Elaina was eliminated in round 3 of the female lower bracket, while Sakuta finished 3rd overall in the male division.
Mikoto Misaka and Houtarou Oreki, the top favorites of their respective divisions, dominated the main tournament to win their second titles and cement their place as ISML's undisputed greatest. Both characters also won two gems, with Mikoto finally completing the coveted "rainbow necklace" achievement (win every type of necklace).
The tournament held a special "Farewell Match Day" on February 18, two and a half weeks after the main tournament champions were decided. It consisted of the last three gem rounds and a slew of assorted exhibition matches. The results were released on February 24, officially bringing ISML to a conclusion. Mashiro Shiina became the second girl to complete the "rainbow necklace" after this match.
Schedule[edit]
The schedule is tentative and may be subject to change without prior notice.
All match days begin at 10:00 UTC[note3] and end exactly 24 hours later. Regular rounds last 3 days from match start to results and downtime, while necklace / pendant rounds last 5 days. The tournament is scheduled for 25 match days (excluding nominations).
Main Tournament
- Nominations: 2022 September 28 ~ October 05
- Main Tournament nomination results were released on October 28[6]
- Preliminaries: 2022 October 28[a1] ~ November 12
- Split 1: 2022 November 17 ~ December 08
- Split 2: 2022 December 13 ~ 2023 January 03
- Playoffs: 2022 January 08 ~ February 01[a2]
- A Farewell Match Day is planned to occur on 2023 February 18, well after the champions have been decided.
- Exhibition matches may be scheduled during the regular season, gem rounds, and the aforementioned "farewell matchday".
- Winter/Spring/Summer Nominations: 2022 September 28 ~ October 05 (shared with main tourney)
- Nomination results are scheduled to release after the main tournament's preliminary rounds
- Winter/Spring/Summer Seasonal: 2022 November 12 ~ 2023 January 03 (they will run together)
- Fall Nominations: 2022 December 13 ~ 20
- Fall Seasonal: 2023 January 03 ~ January 28
- Seasonal Circlet: 2023 February 01
- ↑ Originally scheduled to begin on October 26, the preliminaries' first three rounds were delayed, because the nomination round's results took longer than expected as a result of a dramatic increase in voters.
- ↑ Playoff brackets may prematurely end on January 28 if the Upper Bracket winner places 1st in the Grand Final round. However, this does not affect other matches scheduled for February 01, such as the 7th gem round, seasonal circlet decider, and several exhibition tournament finals.
Nominations[edit]
Rules[edit]
Nominations for main tournament, winter seasonal, spring seasonal, and summer seasonal will be grouped together in one ballot. For fall seasonal, see ISML 2022/Seasonals#Fall.
How to Nominate?
- 32 entries
- Enter character name AND series
- A given ballot must follow these requirements; failure to do so will render it void, meaning it will not count towards the results.
- Invalid entries are discarded and will not void your ballot unless it fails any of the requirements above
- Each nomination counts as one vote. All nominees are equal. Duplicate nominations will be discarded.
- Name order, spelling, alternate names, or language do not matter as long as the character specified is made clear. If the staff cannot identify the character beyond reasonable doubt, it will be discarded.
Eligibility rules
- Character must appear in a valid Japanese-produced anime installment within the following dates:
- Main tournament: any date before 2022 October 05
- Winter: 2022 January 01 ~ March 31
- Spring: 2022 April 01 ~ June 30
- Summer: 2022 July 01 ~ September 30
- Priority order: Main tournament > Winter > Spring > Summer. If a character is eligible for both main tournament and seasonals, they will be entered for the main tournament first. If they failed to qualify for the main tournament's regular season, they may enter any of the eligible seasonals (according to priority) if they have sufficient votes.
- For Fall, eligible characters who are not participating in any ISML match during the fall nominations can be nominated, including those who were eliminated in the regular season.

Regular Season[edit]
For detailed results of each division, see ISML 2022/RS Female and ISML 2022/RS Male.
General rules
- All characters are divided into groups of 6
- Single round robin
- Ranking criteria:
In ISML's website, the splits are named Aquamarine and Amethyst because the gems representing regular season stages are hard-coded in the website. The gem names do not necessarily indicate the necklace and pendant awarded at the end of each split.
Split 1[edit]
72 characters, 12 groups. Characters are split into 6 pots based on preliminary round final position; for each pot a character is randomly drawn and put into one of 12 groups. The live draw was hosted by Chibasa and starryrainynight, and initially revealed on ISML Discord server's voice chat.
- 1st-3rd advance to Split 2
- 4th-5th qualify for Wildcard round
- The Wildcard round is Approval Vote (choose any character(s) you like); top 6 advance
- 6th placers are eliminated

Playoffs[edit]
Sixteen (16) characters from each gender play in a modified double-elimination bracket to decide the Tiara and Scepter winner.
- All characters begin in the Upper Bracket; losers drop to Lower Bracket. Characters who lose in the Lower Bracket are eliminated, but they can still play consolation matches for placement.
- If a match is tied, the winner is decided by (1) head to head record in the regular season, then (2) higher seed in the first round.
- Re-seedings may be done after every round in order to minimize rematches from the regular season
Modifications:
- Upper Bracket proceeds as normal, with the winner proceeding to Grand Final
- The later rounds of the lower bracket will work differently:
- Lower Bracket Round 3 (LB Semifinal) consists of 6 characters: 4 Lower Bracket R2 winners + 2 losers from the Upper Bracket Semifinals. 1v1 matches
- Lower Bracket Round 4 (LB Final) will have 4 characters: 3 Lower Bracket R3 winners + the Upper Bracket runner-up. 1v1 matches
- The next round is the Grand Final: 3 characters (Upper Bracket winner + 2 Lower Bracket survivors) will compete in an Instant-Runoff Vote match (rank the characters in order from 1st-3rd).
- If the Upper Bracket winner places 1st, they will be the grand champion.
- If one of the Lower Bracket survivors places 1st, they will compete against the Upper Bracket winner again in a bracket reset match, Range Vote format. The winner of that match will be the grand champion.
Seeding[edit]
Criteria:
- All directly qualified characters from Split 2 are arranged by Position > Split 2 CVPD.
- Remaining characters are seeded based on Split 2 Wildcard round position.
- Some characters may be swapped around in the first round to avoid rematches from the regular season, and on subsequent rounds as well.

Consolations and Final Rankings[edit]
Characters are first grouped by which round they were eliminated in. The top finishers and bottom finishers of the next group above them will join together in another round of voting, while the rest will have their positions confirmed.
Voting format varies depending on the organizer's preference: approval voting, range voting, and instant-runoff voting.
For characters eliminated in lower bracket round 2 to lower bracket finals (4th-12th), their rank is decided by overall cumulative vote points (CVP), from preliminaries until their last match.

Gem Rounds[edit]
As a consequence of ISML 2022's shortened schedule, the necklace and pendant rounds were scattered throughout the Main Tournament, from the preliminary rounds until the very end of the playoffs. The "1 gem per person" limit is removed (with some exceptions). The most important new feature however, is that all gem rounds are unnamed, i.e. will no longer use the traditional gem order. Rather, once a winner is selected, the staff will select one of seven gems to them based on the following criteria:
- Not awarded yet[note5]
- Missing gem
- Most appropriate gem (based on traits, physical appearance, etc.). A public poll may be organized for this purpose.
Given that ISML 2022 is the final edition and that past champions are allowed, these rules have significant implications for who gets the coveted "rainbow necklace"[note6] achievement, of which five girls can realistically obtain this year:
- Shana — won 7 gems; needs Topaz
- Asuna Yuuki — won 7 gems; needs Amethyst
- Mashiro Shiina — won 9 gems; needs Emerald
- Mikoto Misaka — won 7 gems; needs Topaz and Amethyst
- Kanade Tachibana — won 7 gems; needs Emerald and Ruby
As of December 12, Mikoto Misaka is the first girl to have obtained this achievement after empathically winning the first two necklace rounds. Mashiro Shiina became the second girl to obtain the achievement after placing 1st in the 5th gem round during the special "farewell matchday", automatically giving her the emerald necklace.
Format[edit]
Same format as usual: 8 characters will compete in an Instant Runoff Vote (rank from 1st-8th). Unlike previous editions, all gem rounds are unnamed; once a winner is decided, a gem will be awarded to them.
- Round 1: Held after Preliminaries; contested between the group winners from Preliminary Round 2
- Rounds 2-3: Held after each regular season's Split 1 and Split 2 respectively. Characters are selected according to Regular season ranking criteria: Group position > Wins > Ties > CVPD within period > CVP within period > Staff selection
- Round 4: Held after Playoffs Day 3 (Upper Bracket Semifinals / Lower Bracket R2). Contested by the 8 remaining characters at the time.
- The last three gem rounds will be scheduled at the same time on the special "Farewell Match Day" on 2023 February 18. Each round has a qualifying round held during Playoffs Day 5, 6, and 7 to determine each gem round's eight (8) contestants. The format is Approval Vote. A character may only be selected for one qualifying round.
- Round 5: Top 16 characters with the most wins in 2022 (including exhibitions and playoffs) who haven't won a gem round in 2022. Regular season ranking criteria will be used as tiebreakers
- Round 6: Top 16 characters with the most 1v1 wins (including seasonals, exhibitions and playoffs) without winning a gem round ever. Season rank will be used as tiebreaker
- Round 7: ISML staff personally selects 16 characters from all previous sub-tournaments (seasonals and exhibitions). These include the following: Seasonal Contest (2012-2021), Male "Exhibition" Tournaments (2011-2014), Divine Circlet (2011, 2015~2020), Divine Crown (2017~2020), Couples / Ships (2019~2022), Touhou (2013, 2017, 2020), Visual Novels (2014, 2021), Video Games (2018), Idols/Musicians (2020), Virtual YouTubers (2021), Genshin (2022), and Exhibition Gems (2011~2014, 2020~2021).
Using this format, the maximum possible amount of gems that can be won by a single contestant is five (5) for females, and four (4) for males. The qualifications are:
- placing 1st in their group on Preliminary Round 2
- perform well throughout the regular season's two splits (2 gem rounds)
- surviving at least three days in the playoffs bracket by reaching Upper Bracket Semis or Lower Bracket Semis/R3
- For females, they can join the fifth gem round based on "winning a seasonal contest or exhibition" criterion, but in practice the selection of contestants ultimately falls on the ISML staff, whom are likely to prioritize characters who have never won a necklace yet.

Reception[edit]
Trending on Bilibili[edit]
The announcement of ISML ending with a last special edition on 2022 gained much attention from the Chinese ACGN community, since the tournament is seen by them as the "last known significant saimoe". On July 27, the announcement briefly trended on Bilibili's searches, as reported by multiple users across several platforms,[7][8] and a topic about this announcement, subtitled "Battle of the Gods" (implying that many previous champions would appear in the playoffs), was created on the website.[9]
After the grand final results were released, news of Mikoto Misaka's victory trended at #1 on her namesake website Bilibili on February 01-02, as many users in ISML Tieba would gladly tell you.[10][11][12] Soon after, it was acknowledged by several official Bilibili accounts like 番剧茶会 (Bancha Tea Ceremony)[13] and 干杯动画直播机 (Cheers animation livestream machine).[14] As a way of honoring the character, the latter channel livestreamed episodes 10-14 of Railgun season 3 on February 02, which includes a special giveaway raffle.
Disagreements between Necklace Rounds 5 and 6[edit]
Prior to Playoffs Day 5 (January 24), disputes emerged on ISML Tieba and in the ISML Discord server about which special necklace round qualifier should Yui Hirasawa be placed in. Hirasawa was eligible for Necklace Round 5 (most 1v1 wins in 2022 without a necklace in 2022) and Necklace Round 6 (most 1v1 career wins without a necklace ever), but she can only attend one of these qualifying matches. Some fans from the K-On! camp wanted her to play in Necklace Round 6 because it is the easier round. If Hirasawa qualified for Necklace Round 5, it would put her against the likes of Mashiro Shiina, who is pursuing the "rainbow necklace", Violet Evergarden, a powerful Kyoto Animation heroine, and Rem, who lost by 7 votes in Necklace Round 4, practically reducing Hirasawa's chances of winning the award to zero.
On January 21, a presumed Hirasawa fan submitted a thread on ISML Tieba accusing Tearsinheart, a prominent manager of several voting factions in QQ (No Game No Life, Yui Yuigahama, Mashiro), of sabotaging Yui Hirasawa's chances of winning a necklace. The OP claimed that the manager wanted to keep Hirasawa away from necklace round 6 because it would threaten their mains Yuigahama and Shiro. To support their claim, the OP uploaded screenshots of a QQ chat. The thread was later blocked by the ISML Tieba staff.[15] Several hours later, another user posted a thread calling out the blocking of the aforementioned post.[16]
On January 24, a heated discussion erupted on the ISML Discord server after Hirasawa was confirmed in necklace round 5's qualifier. The complaints were directed towards the staff not explaining the reason behind some of the exhibition matches in Playoffs Day 4, which was deemed "unfair" to other girls because it affected who qualifies for necklaces round 5 and 6. Several users also complained that the exhibitions should not affect the main tournament at all, including who gets to play for necklaces and pendants. Maglor, the head organizer, finally explained that those matches were intentionally chosen to serve as a tiebreaker for said girls "in the bubble". He also released a written statement acknowledging that their plans of organizing matches during the playoffs did not take necklace rounds 5 and 6 into account, which according to him, ultimately resulted from the staff's own mistakes, their lack of transparency, and busy real-life schedules.[17]
In the end, Yui Hirasawa barely failed to qualify for Necklace Round 5 when she placed 9th behind Nao Tomori by just 124 votes.
Disagreements on Necklace Round 7[edit]
Another disagreements on necklace round 7 surfaced when some fans of Ran Mouri from Detective Conan complained that their girl was snubbed on the necklace round qualifier, while Ai Haibara, her main rival for Conan's affections, was selected. As a result, they scolded the ISML staff because of perceived "unfairness", especially since gem round 7 is personally selected by staff. Most of the complaints came from Weibo and Baidu Tieba.[18][19][20] Even after voting for gem round 7 has finished, complaints from Ran Mouri fans persisted. Some users thought that an earlier exhibition match between Haibara and Ran, in which the latter girl lost, was the reason why Ran fans were so provoked.
In February 02, Chibasa posted an official statement explaining the organizers' decisions behind selecting contestants for the special gems in detail.[21] In the case of Ran vs Haibara dispute, more staff members prioritized Haibara over Ran because the latter already won Fall 2021, while Haibara won zero awards.

Notes[edit]
Notes
- ↑ From 2021 to 2022, the main tournament was officially renamed Stella while the seasonal contests were renamed Nova. However, the Saimoe Wiki will NOT use these terms in this context, because they were previously used as the names of the two sub-leagues of the Female Main Tournament from 2012 to 2015.
- ↑ In ISML 2022's charter, the main tournament refers to the tournament proper, starting from preliminary rounds and ending in playoffs. The Saimoe Wiki will NOT follow this definition, because the "main tournament" here refers to the primary ISML female and male contests, the one whose winners are awarded the Tiara and Scepter.
- ↑ 03:00 Pacific Daylight, 06:00 Eastern Daylight, 18:00 Beijing/Taipei/Manila/Singapore
- ↑ 96 entrants minus direct invites (96-12 = 84 for both genders)
- ↑ presumed to be awarded in the traditional gem order: aquamarine-topaz-amethyst-sapphire-emerald-ruby-diamond, unless the winner has a missing gem.
- ↑ win all 7 gem periods at least once
Examples
- ↑ BanG Dream! > BanG Dream! Garupa Pico, Fate series (stay night, Apocrypha, Grand Order, etc.)
- ↑ Examples: Isekai Quartet, Kaginado
Characters who are eligible because of crossovers will appear under their original series in the tournament. - ↑ Examples: InuYasha > YashaHime, Negima! > UQ Holder!, Love Live!'s various installments (School Idol Project, Sunshine, Nijigasaki, Superstar, etc.)
